The Fate of a country
It's morning, the ground is wet with last nights rain and the morning fog has not fully lifted. In a lonely parking lot, a young woman with long dark hair and blue eyes sits in her car staring at herself in the mirror. The weight of the world heavy on her shoulders. "So, it's finally come, the day we finally figure out what we are going to do with the insurgent problem." She thinks to herself as she looks over her reflection in the review mirror while she clipped on a name tag that really Evelyn Myers. Everything has been building up to this day. Little by little this beloved country was falling apart and there was nothing any of them could do. Well, that was until today. Vivian her co-worker had discovered a revolutionary idea that she believes would help this country and their people. But the question is, can this land be saved? Or will this be too little too late?
With a sigh, the young woman shook away those doubting thoughts, and nodded, she knew better than that. Of course this country could be saved even with the Insurgent problem. Damn rebels, didn't they understand that the government was are only here to make sure everyone in the country is safe and has a good life? After all, that is what the government was built for. To govern the people, to make choices they themselves would not be able to make. To protect them from harm. Even if it was from themselves. Yes, that was their goal, their job, that was what they were meant to do, and that was exactly what her co-worker Evelyn was going to propose to the board meeting today.
So with new found faith she got out of her car and headed inside. Inside was grey and dull, everyone dressed in the same type of either black or grey business attire with their noses in that morning's memories and papers for that day's assignments. She headed into the boardroom. There she found that most of her colleagues were already there awaiting the meeting to start. As she headed to her place she took note of everyone that had been called that day. There was less then she thought. This small amount of people were the ones called to this meeting to make such a choice?
Evelyn took her place at the table as everyone else began pouring in. "Can we really handle this?" She thought to herself as Vivian motioned for the lights to go out signaling the start of her presentation.
"Good morning everyone, I am very pleased to see that you all made it here today to discuss this very real and very large problem we have. As you all know very well, terrorist activities have risen exponentially in this past couple of years. Bombings in concerts and shootings at park gatherings are only the tips the ice burg. Civil unrest is at an all-time high and soon it will reach a boiling point. It is our job as the government to do something about this crises. Stop it before it comes to the boiling point and takes more lives than it already has."
As Vivian spoke pictures flashed behind her showing dreadful images of those affected by the insurgent problem. The injuered and the dead from verious attacks flashing past like a slide show. Evelyn felt sick and tore her eyes away from the pictures. " How can anyone hurt their own people like this?" They had to be stopped it was the right thing to do to heal their country.
Vivian continued. "Now what I am proposing we do to stop these atrocities and to save our families from falling victim to these terrorists, is this. I have done some research and came across some rather, interesting information. I have found that Germany, in 1941 did experiments on subjects in bunkers hidden away deep underground. There they managed to make some amazing scientific breakthroughs. One I found, and I am sure you will find, very interesting. This is an experiment they had initiated known as the W.I.M project. Also known as Water imbalance modification project." She flipped the pictures to a diagram to help explain. Evelyn returned her eyes to the screen and what she heard horrified her.
" Using plutonium 23, a very rare type of plutonium. They were able to create a fusion reaction that destabilized the hydrogen atoms within the water. Then once ingested by a subject they found it made him docile and reduced an individual`s power to resist domination. By slowly narcotizing a certain area of the brain, making him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him. This method was put into effect immediately and was used to control the population in any given area through mass distribution of the irradiation into the drinking water. That was how they were able to accumulate such a mass following and convince an entire country that what they were going to bring the world into a utopia. " As Vivian flipped through her presentation Eveylen was able to feel the knots in her stomach tighten the more she went on. She wasn't actually suggesting what Evelyn thought she was suggesting right? No of course not that was preposterous. No one would ever consider this kind of thing. That was where her train of thought stopped and her thoughts were realized. Vivian was actually saying what she thought she was saying.
" This is what I propose we do for our people. I believe we should recreate this experiment, bottle the water say it's a new brand and market it to all the known and potential insurgent neighborhoods all around the country." She ended there with the last shot behind her of a beautiful glass bottle filled to the brim with crystal clear water.
So this was what she was wanting to do. Feed them radiation through their water supply to make them docile and turn them all into mindless zombies. They couldn't do this, it was wrong. they couldn't poison their people just to keep themselves in power. But if they didn't do something more people could get hurt, or worse die.
Torn between what was right and what was best for the country Evelyn looked down to her hands and listened with bated breath as votes were called in. Every yay and nay ringing in her ears. One vote yay, one vote nay. One vote domination, one vote life.
Evelyn couldn't think she was torn between her desire to stop the attacks and let her people live happy lives and her morals, they couldn't really do this, could they? Was this even about protecting the country or was this a ploy so that this small amount of people can stay in power?
Evelyn was trapped within herself. Her thoughts swirling in her head as she desperately tried to decide what was best. a voice caught her ears and she looked up, the whole room was now staring at her. " We have a tie. Everyone in this room has voted, except you." Vivian stated.
Evelyn was that last, the one vote that decided everything she closed her eyes and took in a breath to steel her nerves the fate of a country was on her shoulders. She had to make a choice. She opened her eyes once more and voted.
